Which dragon do you need to slay on St George's Day?
We all have our challenges but which of these dragons are you going to slay?
Today is St George’s Day in the England. It isn’t a day that is widely celebrated possibly because, in my opinion, it’s a strange thing to celebrate. As children we are told stories of St George who stayed the dragon and saved everyone. In reality he wasn’t a knight, the dragon was a much later addition to the tale and he never even visited England. In reality he was likely a Roman soldier who was from Turkey and who was martyred because he refused to make a sacrifice to Pagan gods.
So, my former teacher brain wants to branch off into a number of different elements we could expand on from this story: the proselytism of Pagans, how stories mutate over time, how people from the past are often glorified in order to control the masses, how the hero of a story is determined by the writer and their perspective… but I thought I would keep it a little lighter today and think about what what metaphorical dragons you need to slay this St George’s Day.
