I like to write at. a cafe in my neighbourhood. It helps me concentrate, not to think about other domestic issues and to focus just on my writing for 3-4 hours.
Do you use headphones Isabela? I find I can get distracted by conversations and the general hustle and bustle in cafes. But I don’t like wearing headphones either.
No, I am able to ignore the noise. It becomes just a background. The tables are outside in a garden; maybe that makes a difference - the noise gets muffled, not amplified by the echo in the indoor places. But for me it is mostly about the habit. I know that when I go there, it is for one purpose only - to work. So I get my ice latte, and I start writing.
That’s wonderful. Having an outdoor space definitely helps. We sometimes do the same, but there aren’t enough days when the weather is nice enough to sit outside a cafe here. I’m so glad you have found what works for you though, that is all that matters.
I’m so grateful that you found the article helpful. It is only designed to do just that, make you think. Ultimately it is what works for you, isn’t it?
Once upon a time I had a dedicated office that I yearn for now. That said, I'm rather fond of the occupant of said office so until my two fly the next (I'm in no rush) I am fluid in where I write.
Things I cannot do without:
1. Order/a tidy space. I don't mean nothing around me, but piles of paper etc would make me twitchy. If I'm in one of my coworking spaces or tucked away somewhere in the house, the immediate space around me can't be messy.
2. The right noise. For some writing, I write in silence. Noise cancelling on. Other writing, ambient or classical/instrumental.
3. Grounding myself before I start. I can, in fairness, write pretty much anywhere, as long as I take a minute first.
Things I would love: A dedicated, just for me, writing room. It would be cosy, warm, there will be books and plants and comfort and.....
Would I be any more creative in my own office. Who knows? It'll be fun finding out at some point.
I think we all adapt to the needs of the world around us, don’t we? I know I am lucky to have my office, but it does double as storage and spare room so that means there are limitations on what I can do within it. We learn what we need over time though and you are far too self aware not to have your writing space sorted x
We work with what we've got and are grateful for it. Rewind however many years, when we were starting our careers - who'd have thought where we find a quiet sanctuary to write would be more important than promotions or salaries or any of the "standard" stuff?

Some really good tips. Will make sure I give some thought to the points you have written about.
